East Greenland

East Greenland

Sailing through Scoresbysund, the largest and most breathtaking fjord system in the world, is like stepping into a living, breathing masterpiece of nature.

Aboard our expedition ship, you’ll glide through crystal-clear waters surrounded by towering ice cliffs, glistening glaciers, and snow-capped mountains that rise dramatically from the sea.

The air is sharp and pure, the silence broken only by the crack of calving ice or the distant call of seabirds.

As you venture deeper into this remote, Arctic wonderland, the landscapes unfold in a symphony of surreal beauty — from the striking contrasts of frozen wilderness to the kaleidoscope of colors painted across the sky.

This is a place where time slows down, and every moment is a reminder of the untamed magic that lies at the edge of the Earth. Whether you’re marveling at the ancient icebergs, encountering Arctic wildlife, or witnessing the golden glow of an Arctic sunset, a journey through Scoresbysund is an unforgettable exploration of both the natural world and the spirit of adventure.

Voyage Itinerary

East Greenland Unscripted

Sept 8th - 18th, 2027 and Sept 17th - 27th, 2027

For the Authentic Adventurer

This expedition attracts curious-minded, well-traveled individuals who seek immersive off-grid experiences during the tail end of the Arctic summer when the ice opens up just enough to allow us into some of the Earth’s most impressive fjord systems. This time of year, East Greenland is stunning in its grandiosity, with creatures bustling at their liveliest on the colourful tundra, and Northern Lights illuminating the sky at night like an Arctic tapestry shown only to a select few. We’ll cast off from Nerlit Inaat in true expedition style to write our own bespoke itinerary that adapts to the wind, the wildlife guided by the experience of our captain and expedition team. Every journey aboard the Captain Arctic unfolds based on what the Arctic offers as we cruise peacefully and responsibly through the ice and fjords.

A Typical Day

Every day of our expedition will be unique. Thanks to the captain’s local knowledge, and the experience of our team of expert guides and guest-focused crew, our days will be a blend of the following:

Perpetual Light: The midnight sun reminds us that there are 24 hours in every day, which means that the highlights of our voyage aren’t necessarily limited to regular business hours. Relax on deck after dinner and take in the ethereal beauty of twilight in the wee hours before retiring to your stateroom equipped with blackout shades to ensure a restful polar sleep.

Wildlife Encounters: With the awareness that we are visitors in this icy realm that polar bears, muskoxen, whales, Arctic foxes and many species of birds call home, our vigilant guide staff maintains a constant watch so we can spot, stop, and respectfully observe these marvelous creatures involved in their seasonal routines.

Remote Wilderness: The Captain Arctic’s size and spirit of adventure allow us to explore the many coves, bays and islands of East Greenland where other ships won’t be found. We’ll take our zodiacs ashore for walks through the wildflowers of the tundra and hikes to spectacular overlooks where you can spend time contemplating your place in the vastness of this unique landscape and the world.

Active Adventures: The Captain Arctic’s gear closet is stocked with kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and fishing equipment. Enjoy the Arctic at your own pace with a paddle in-hand, or try dropping a line to catch your very first polar cod. Once per trip, we’ll find a picturesque spot for the bravest among us to take a memorable polar plunge into the Arctic Ocean.

Education and Conversation: Our guide staff includes naturalists and historians who are always at hand to bring context to the various species and stories of the Arctic, with the occasional formal lecture from a special guest. With a maximum of 36 passengers on board, you’ll become fast friends with our fascinating expedition staff and get to know your fellow travellers well. Our open bridge policy provides an insider-view of how our captain and her crew navigate the Arctic Ocean and offers a first-hand opportunity to learn how the revolutionary renewable systems of the Captain Arctic operate.

Fresh Chef-Prepared Cuisine: All meals are prepared fresh onboard by our professional culinary team using local ingredients whenever possible. Follow the aroma of freshly baked bread, discover our chef's daily homemade muesli, seasonal delights, or typical Nordic pastries. Savor dishes like freshly caught Arctic salmon sushi or local algae and gravlax in our cozy dining space, and try our unique Arctic cocktails or beers brewed at 80° North. The ship’s special cellar is stocked with a selection of premium wines and liquors that pair perfectly with the trip of a lifetime.

An Excuse to Disconnect: Your journey is as much about disconnection as it is about discovery. WiFi is intentionally limited to one specific area of the ship, keeping all common spaces and staterooms completely off the grid. With this intentional digital minimalism, you'll experience the Arctic's peak summer as explorers once did—fully present and completely immersed.

Relaxation & Transformation: Practice traditional Nordic relaxation rituals in our sauna and cold Norwegian bath, maintain your energy for daily adventures in our fitness center, and revel in the unique opportunity to just sit in Arctic stillness without engine noise or distraction. Wake up feeling inspired by internet-free tranquility in your stateroom, writing your own daily expedition notes before joining your fellow guests for a healthy breakfast.

Getting There

Our journey will begin in Iceland, so you will first need to fly to Reykjavik. From there you’ll make your way with Icelandair to Akureyri and arrive on the first day of the expedition. You can alternatively reach Akureyri from Reykjavik by private transfer or rental car which takes about six hours on a winding beautiful road. You have one night included at a hotel in Akureyri and on the day of departure, our team will be there to transfer with you to the airport where we’ll board our flight to Nerlit Inaat (Constable Point), Greenland where you will board the Captain Arctic.

Adventure-Ready Requirements

This expedition is designed for active, capable adventurers. In the remote Arctic, every passenger's safety depends on the group's collective physical readiness. This isn't a casual cruise. You'll be stepping into zodiacs in Arctic conditions, hiking across tundra, and navigating a working expedition vessel without an elevator. If you have questions or concerns about your readiness for a journey on the Captain Arctic, please get in touch with us.

Essential Gear

Once you have booked, we’ll provide you with a packing list and specific recommendations. Necessary items are a quality waterproof shell jacket and pants, versatile mid-layers and base layers, insulated, waterproof gloves and a warm beanie. High-quality insulated boots will be provided. We recommend polarized sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen, as well as rich moisturizers for the dry Arctic air and a swimsuit for the polar plunge challenge. No outdoor shoes are allowed inside the Captain Arctic but if you have hiking shoes that you prefer to use on uneven surfaces, you are welcome to bring them and they can be left in the mudroom upon return to the vessel after an excursion. You will be provided with comfortable and stylish indoor shoes in your preferred size upon boarding.

The Bottom Line
36 passengers. No fixed itinerary. Expert guides. Minimal impact. Maximum experience.

Message from Heather

Hello, fellow entrepreneur!

First, let me say how much fun it was to be on How I Built This with Guy and Tariq. I really appreciated their thoughtful advice.

Every once in a while you come across an idea that just won’t let you go. It becomes the thing you think about every waking and sleeping hour. The feeling that you can see how the future can look, and you know, deep inside, that you need to be a part of making it happen. In this case, it was when my friend Sophie, a brilliant polar ice captain, floated the idea of building a fleet of next generation wind-and-solar powered expedition ships to totally transform the way travelers experience the Arctic.

As someone who has been working in the polar industry for a decade and a half, who had witnessed a lot of ‘sustainability initiatives’ that were mostly lip service (and felt strongly that there had to be a better way), Sophie’s vision hit me in the deepest part of my soul.

It was a crazy idea, but not an impossible one.

I jumped in to help her with the layout and design of the ship from an expedition guide’s perspective. We changed the configuration of the cabins, we moved the mudroom to a more user-friendly location, and we shared our visions of what it would feel like to sail the (yet to be named) Captain Arctic through remote polar waters with just a few dozen adventurous guests.

Imagine this:

Overhead, the northern lights pulse from horizon to horizon. It’s a spectrum of light that delights you visually, but you swear you can feel the energy in your chest – an invitation to connect with the universe and marvel in the magic of Nature. No photo or video ever taken comes close to the feeling of experiencing the northern lights – they’re more profound than you can imagine. The show above is yours alone and will never be seen by anyone the same way again.

When you start to feel a chill, you scoot back inside to enjoy a snack and a drink in our cozy lounge, followed by a healthy gourmet meal. After dessert, you enjoy an encore from the Aurora through the picture window of the sauna, or from the bridge as you chat with the Captain, followed by the best polar sleep of your life.

The next morning, you wake with the light and marvel that the first thing you see are towering snow-covered peaks, a welcome change from an overflowing inbox. Gliding silently into a secluded fjord, we discover a pod of belugas, unbothered by our visit and curious to see our vessel. As we move along the fast ice, a polar bear and her cub glimpse the Captain Arctic for the first time. We are respectful visitors, close enough to recognize one another, but far enough to be neither threat nor prey.

In the afternoon as we float around a point of towering basalt cliffs on a nearby island, thousands of little auks swoop above, one of the largest breeding colonies in the Arctic. We launch kayaks and paddleboards in the calm waters of a nearby bay –  the only noises here are the hisses and pops from the melting ice. You can see 10 meters straight down through crystal clear water, to a sea floor that only sees full sunlight a few months a year.

What makes all of these experiences even better is who you’re sharing it with. Like you, the travelers who have already jumped in to join us are seeking a deeper understanding of the Arctic while maintaining an active, exploratory spirit. Our guide staff are the best of the best – expert naturalists, photographers, scientists, and historians, who are as much fun to hang out with as they are to learn from.

It’s easy to unplug completely if you want to, with wi-fi limited to just one small section of the ship. Disconnecting from the digital world to intentionally connect with Nature and your partner, family, friends or your team is what Minimal Impact Cruises is all about. (In fact, the Captain Arctic is where I will be celebrating my 50th birthday, phone-free, with all of my favourite people!)

Speaking of being onboard, I will be on each one of our departures and would be thrilled to have you and your friends join me. I love to talk with fellow travelers and entrepreneurs like you and am incredibly passionate about our vessel and our destinations. Send me a direct message below if you’d like to connect and we can have a conversation.

Thanks for being among the first to experience what Minimal Impact cruising is all about. I can’t wait to meet you!
