Svalbard
Embark on an unforgettable journey through the Arctic wilderness onboard the Captain Arctic departing from Longyearbyen, the vibrant capital of the Svalbard archipelago.
Navigate past towering, snowcapped peaks and through massive scenic fjords, their grandeur mirrored by the artfully sculpted glaciers that have shaped this frozen land over millennia.
As you glide across the icy waters, witness the Arctic tundra through the lounge’s floor to ceiling windows, where colorful mosses and lichens paint the landscape, providing a feast for the majestic Svalbard reindeer. Keep a keen eye out for seals and walruses lounging lazily on ice floes, their relaxed forms a testament to the pristine, unspoiled beauty of this remote Arctic paradise. If we’re lucky, we’ll spot a whale or two as we sail up the coast.
We’ll be constantly scouting for Arctic wildlife and when we encounter some – be it a polar fox, a haul-out of walruses, or a pod of beluga whales – we’ll get into the inflatable Zodiacs for a closer look, all without disturbing them in their natural habitat.

For the Mindful Explorer
This expedition attracts curious-minded, well-traveled individuals who seek authentic experiences during the peak of the Arctic summer. This time of year, Svalbard is in its full glory, with wildlife at maximum activity, the midnight sun painting the mountain peaks, and wildflowers transforming the tundra into a living canvas. We’ll cast off from Longyearbyen in true expedition style to write our own bespoke itinerary that adapts to the wind, the wildlife and the curiosity and experience of our captain and expedition team. Every journey aboard the Captain Arctic unfolds based on what the Arctic offers as we cruise peacefully and responsibly through the ice and fjords.
A Typical Day
Every day of our expedition will be unique. Thanks to the captain’s local knowledge, and the experience of our team of expert guides and guest-focused crew, our days will be a blend of the following:
Perpetual Light: The midnight sun reminds us that there are 24 hours in every day, which means that the highlights of our voyage aren’t necessarily limited to regular business hours. Relax on deck after dinner and take in the ethereal beauty of twilight in the wee hours before retiring to your stateroom equipped with blackout shades to ensure a restful polar sleep.
Wildlife Encounters: With the awareness that we are visitors in this icy realm that polar bears, walrus, whales, reindeer and many species of birds call home, our vigilant guide staff maintains a constant watch so we can spot, stop, and respectfully observe these marvelous creatures involved in their seasonal routines.
Remote Wilderness: The Captain Arctic’s size and spirit of adventure allow us to explore the many coves, bays and islands of Svalbard where other ships won’t be found. We’ll take our zodiacs ashore for walks through the wildflowers of the tundra and hikes to spectacular overlooks where you can spend time contemplating your place in the vastness of this unique landscape and the world.
Active Adventures: The Captain Arctic’s gear closet is stocked with kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and fishing equipment. Enjoy the Arctic at your own pace with a paddle in-hand, or try dropping a line to catch your very first polar cod. Once per trip, we’ll find a picturesque spot for the bravest among us to take a memorable polar plunge into the Arctic Ocean.
Education and Conversation: Our guide staff includes naturalists and historians who are always at hand to bring context to the various species and stories of the Arctic, with the occasional formal lecture from a special guest. With a maximum of 36 passengers on board, you’ll become fast friends with our fascinating expedition staff and get to know your fellow travellers well. Our open bridge policy provides an insider-view of how our captain and her crew navigate the Arctic Ocean and offers a first-hand opportunity to learn how the revolutionary renewable systems of the Captain Arctic operate.
Fresh Chef-Prepared Cuisine: All meals are prepared fresh onboard by our professional culinary team using local ingredients whenever possible. Follow the aroma of freshly baked bread, discover our chef's daily homemade muesli, seasonal delights, or typical Nordic pastries. Savor dishes like freshly caught Arctic salmon sushi or local algae and gravlax in our cozy dining space, and try our unique Arctic cocktails or beers brewed at 80° North. The ship’s special cellar is stocked with a selection of premium wines and liquors that pair perfectly with the trip of a lifetime.
An Excuse to Disconnect: Your journey is as much about disconnection as it is about discovery. WiFi is intentionally limited to one specific area of the ship, keeping all common spaces and staterooms completely off the grid. With this intentional digital minimalism, you'll experience the Arctic's peak summer as explorers once did—fully present and completely immersed.
Relaxation & Transformation: Practice traditional Nordic relaxation rituals in our sauna and cold Norwegian bath, maintain your energy for daily adventures in our fitness center, and revel in the unique opportunity to just sit in Arctic stillness without engine noise or distraction. Wake up feeling inspired by internet-free tranquility in your stateroom, writing your own daily expedition notes before joining your fellow guests for a healthy breakfast.
